Auditioning tips for dancers

Ready to audition but not sure where to start? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! Whether it’s your first time stepping into the game or you’re trying out at a new club, these tips will help you rock that shit.

Let’s break it down step-by-step so you can walk in confident, prepared, and ready to slay your audition.

Step 1: Understand the Assignment

Your audition is essentially a job interview. Clubs (especially high-end, well-known ones) are looking for entertainers who look and act like they’ll bring in money. That means showing up looking like, smelling like, and radiating “money,” because that’s the vibe you want to give off.

I personally recommending taking some time to scope out the club you plan to audition at. Visit as a customer first if you can. Pay attention to the vibe, the level of entertainment, and the type of customers and staff. This will help you decide if it’s the kind of environment you want to work in and how to tailor your audition.

Step 2: Preparation Is Key.
Before you head to your audition, follow these steps to set yourself up for success:
1. Call Ahead: Confirm the club is hiring and ask how their audition process works. Do they accept online submissions, or do you need to show up in person? If it’s an in-person audition, ask what to bring and if they have a specific dress code for dancers.
2. Invest in Platform Heels: If you don’t already own a pair, now’s the time to get some! Practice walking and dancing in them beforehand so you feel comfortable and confident.
3. Prepare a Short Routine: If you’ve never danced before, don’t stress about pole tricks just yet. Focus on creating a simple, sexy routine that highlights your best moves and angles. YouTube tutorials and dancer movies can be great for inspiration.
4. Go Solo: There are so many reasons to go alone to your audition but the main reason is: This is your moment. So don’t bring a friend along. You want the focus to be on you and only you. If you need the support, have a friend tag along, but when it’s audition time, it’s highly recommended to go alone.
5. Dress to Impress: Find an outfit that flatters your body and shows off your best features. And don’t forget to dress cute before you even walk into the club. Managers and staff will be sizing you up the moment you arrive, so make a good impression from the start.

Step 3: Crush It at the Audition
When the big day comes, here’s how to make a lasting impression:
Radiate Confidence. From the moment you step in, act like you’re ready for this. Smile, stand tall, and exude energy. Managers want to see someone who looks like they belong on stage.
Take Charge. When you arrive, don’t ask timidly, “Can I audition?” Instead, confidently state, “I’m here to audition today!” For example, when I auditioned at my current club, I said, “I’m here to grace your stage with an audition,” with a big smile. The manager smiled back and said, “Follow me.” Confidence is key!
Show Off Your Personality. Let them see a little glimpse of how you’ll work the floor. Whether you’re bubbly, persuasive, or bold, lean into your natural hustle style.
Be Fully Prepared. Have your hair, makeup, nails, and outfit on point. Bring everything you need (heels, outfit, ID, etc.) in a bag, but avoid lugging around an oversized one if you can.
Don’t Rush Your Dance. Even if moving fast is your style, slow it down a bit for your audition. Give the person watching time to appreciate every move.

Step 4: Handle Rejection Like a Boss
Be aware that rejection happens.  Some managers may say, “Come back later,” or “We’re not hiring right now.” Others might give more specific (and sometimes brutal) reasons, like “too many tattoos” “not the right look.” Or “lose some weight first”

If this happens, take a deep breath. Ask politely when they suggest you return, and remember that rejection doesn’t define you. Sometimes it’s about timing or the manager’s preferences

If you don’t get hired, consider trying again on a different day or at another club. Often, rejection just means there’s a better fit out there waiting for you, and this situation makes that no different .

Final Tips for Auditions
Your First Impression Matters
This is your moment to shine, so bring your best self and leave them wanting more.
Stay Polite and Gracious
Even if you’re not hired, thank them for their time. Don’t let any disappointment show—save the tears for the car ride home if you need to. (We’ve all been there!)
Don’t Give Up
Rejection is tough, but persistence pays off. Stay positive, keep trying, and trust that the right club is out there waiting for you.
Remember Your Worth
No matter what anyone says, YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL, and you belong in this industry. Relax, take a deep breath, and trust yourself.

You got this, babe. Go out there and make them see the star that you are! 💖
